Audit automation: evidence, ownership and review

Audit automation can help a team collect evidence, track work, and maintain repeatable processes. The useful question is which work becomes more reliable and which decisions still need an accountable reviewer.

Start with the process you need to improve

Identify the control owner, evidence source, review frequency, and expected outcome before choosing software. Decide who investigates missing or conflicting evidence and who approves exceptions. A dashboard status should be traceable to a defined check and the underlying record.

Check the evidence behind the status

  • Coverage: which systems, accounts, and periods are included, and what is excluded?
  • Collection: when was evidence collected, what permissions did the connector use, and what happens when it fails?
  • Review: who confirms that the information is complete and relevant to the control?
  • Exceptions: how are unresolved items assigned, escalated, and closed?
  • Retention: can your team retrieve the evidence and review history when needed, including if it changes tools?

Keep access reviews accountable

Automation may assemble an access population and route reviews. The responsible owner still needs to assess whether access is appropriate and follow through on changes. See the existing user access review guide for the basic review process.

Evaluate AI features as a change to the workflow

If a tool adds AI, ask what information reaches it, which providers process that information, what it retains, and whether outputs can change records or trigger actions. Establish the review and approval needed for consequential outputs. Check release notices, subprocessor updates, and your own administrator settings rather than relying only on a prior questionnaire.

Start with the SOC and vendor-review FAQs. Security evidence for the underlying service can be assessed using the vulnerability assessment and penetration testing guide.

Use automation to support the examination

Agree on evidence needs and accessibility with the examination team. A tool’s checklist or automated status is not the auditor’s conclusion. Keep responsibility for control operation, evidence quality, and remediation clear even when software performs part of the work.
